What does breast augmentation surgery involve?
Breast Augmentation Procedure Guide
Breast augmentation surgery is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. Most patients come to the hospital early in the morning on the day of their surgery. Your breast enhancement surgery will then take place later that morning or early afternoon that day. Patients are usually able to return home the same day however if your surgery is scheduled for the afternoon you may have to stay overnight before being discharged the next morning. Depending on your specific type of breast enlargement procedure, surgery typically takes between 1 to 2 hours.
Possible Incision Areas
We pride ourselves on making the smallest and most concealed incisions possible, usually four to five centimetres long. There are three incision areas widely used for breast augmentation:
- The infra-mammary incision (under the breast fold)
- The circumareolar incision (around the nipple)
- The axillary incision (in the armpit)
Each incision has its advantages and disadvantages. Your final choice needs to be discussed with your surgeon at consultation before your procedure.
Inserting your breast implants
Your implants will be placed either under or over your chest muscle depending on several factors including the size of your breast, skin quality, and your breast shape. The position of the implant will have been decided prior to surgery between you and your breast augmentation surgeon at your consultations. Implants placed under the muscle tend to give a slightly more natural upper ‘pole’ of the breast and possibly a lower incidence of capsular contracture (scar tissue that can develop around an implant and cause the breast tissue to feel hard).
- Subpectoral (under the chest muscle)
- Subglandular (beneath your breast tissue)
- Dual Plane (partly under the muscle, partly under breast tissue)
Closing your incisions
Dissolvable stitches are normally used to close the incision. Dressings will then be applied. Your cosmetic surgeon may place a drain on each side to remove unwanted fluid from around the implant. These are usually removed prior to discharge. Occasionally drains need to be left in place for a little longer. Book A Consultation

Breast augmentation recovery
We want you to be as comfortable as possible following your implant surgery. Your surgeon will take your medical history and guide you through exactly what to expect when recovering during your consultation, so you can prepare and know exactly what to expect when you go home. Ask your surgeon if you have questions about the procedure. The length of your recovery time depends on your health and other variables.
During the first 48 hours, you may have an elevated body temperature and swelling of the breasts. This is expected and both should return to normal over time. Your breast implants need to be held in their new position, so you will require a surgical support bra to stay in place for a two to four-week period after breast augmentation surgery. During this time, you must restrict your activity to ensure the breast implants are not disturbed. Your surgeon will sometimes recommend the use of an upper pole strap to hold your breasts in the desired position. Advice
- Sleep or rest with your head slightly elevated, avoiding lateral positions. Keep your arms close to your body, and avoid lifting weights until allowed by your surgeon.
- Do not drive for at least 2 days after your surgery, and do not exercise until approved by your surgeon usually 4-6 weeks.
- Do not expose your breasts directly to sunlight until approved by your surgeon.
- Healing cream may be recommended by your surgeon.

What is the long-term impact of breast augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentation is a long-term commitment, and you may require adjustment surgery at a later date. Until recently, the average product life of breast implants was thought to be 10 years. This is no longer the case. Modern breast implants can last for twice that term without needing to be replaced. But if you are in your early 20s, please be aware that you may require additional breast enlargement surgery later in life.
