Facial Surgery Terms Explained

Gravity and the skin’s natural ageing process can result in loss of skin elasticity, thinning of the skin, folds and wrinkles, loss of volume and sometimes the appearance of gauntness. This is often accelerated and heightened by environmental and lifestyle factors such as smoking, sun exposure, stress or weight loss.

Facial surgery can’t stop the ageing process, but there are procedures that will help turn back the clock. The ideal candidate will have some elasticity to the skin and good bone structure.

A facelift  or ‘rhytidectomy’  is very effective in reversing the signs of ageing. Surgery has moved on considerably from the taught, ‘stretched’ look, and most modern facelifts now carefully manipulate the deeper facial tissues and re-drape the skin to produce a fresher, natural, more youthful appearance.

Facelift with fat injection

Combining fat injections (a fat transfer) with a facelift is a successful way of restoring volume to the face as well as reducing the signs of ageing around the neck and jaw line.

Volumetric facelift

As the face loses volume over time, it can appear thin and gaunt. A standard facelift alone may be less effective and result in a taut, stretched look. A new approach is the ‘volumetric’ facelift, which rejuvenates the face and restores fullness.

Brow Lift & Endobrow from Temporal Lift

The lateral browlift or temporal lift concentrates on correcting sagging around the outside of the eyebrow.

Your surgeon will insert an endoscope (a tube with a camera on the end) through three or four small incisions that are hidden in the scalp to minimise scarring.

Open brow

The fatty tissue is removed, the muscles loosened and a section of skin removed. The skin is pulled down and the brow is fixed into its new position to the bone of the forehead.

Face, fat transfer & brow

For those who wish to achieve and maintain a more overall youthful appearance, a facelift (or rhytidectomy) in conjunction with a browlift (endobrow or open brow) and fat transfer (fat injections/fat graft) can deliver the desired results.

Brow and lower eyes

Depending upon individual needs and requirements a brow lift (or forehead lift) can be performed in conjunction with lower eyelid surgery (transconjunctival blepharoplasty) to provide comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Chin implant

To strengthen the jaw line and/or bring the chin or cheekbones into balance with the rest of the face, chin implants may be used.

Facial or orthognathic surgery involves repositioning the bones (osteotomies) to achieve a more contoured, harmonious appearance to the forehead, nose and chin.

Malar implants

Ageing, weight loss or genetics may mean the mid area of the face is not be as contoured or developed as desired. Malar implants (cheek implants) can define the face, create more prominent cheek bones and give a healthier, more youthful appearance. Implants can also be used to correct significant asymmetry between cheekbones.
