Fat transfer has been used for several years in cosmetic surgery and is favoured by many patients as a more natural approach to achieve desired results.
Fat is taken from one area of the body and transferred to another to plump out and rejuvenate the new area. Fat transfer can be an option for a range of procedures, including facelift, breast enhancement, and buttock augmentation providing you have a suitable BMI and access fat to start with.
The official name of this process is lipomodelling but it is also referred to as ‘lipofilling’ or ‘fat injection’.
Why choose lipomodelling?
Lipomodelling offers a less intrusive procedure and a more natural, subtle enhancement than using implants. This is ideal for people that are looking to alter their appearance but do not want any major changes. Utilising the body’s own fat stores is also considered a more natural approach by some.
Fat transfer and lipomodelling can also complement other surgeries for a softer look in the case of breast implants, or a fuller look for lift procedures.
How does lipomodelling work?
Fat is taken from an area where ‘you can pinch an inch’. This will normally be from the abdomen, flank, hips or thighs but can be from any area highlighted below:
This fat is taken via normal liposuction and transferred to special sterile equipment that processes it to make it suitable for injecting into another area of your body.
Lipomodelling isn’t right for everyone as you’ll need to be at least a UK dress size 10-12 to qualify. Unfortunately, we cannot consider patients who do not have sufficient fat resources.

Common types of fat transfer procedures
- Lipomodelling & fat injection facelift
Combining fat transfer with a facelift is an effective way to reduce the signs of ageing to restore fullness and volume to the jaw and neck line.

- Lipomodelling for breast enhancement
New advances in lipomodelling mean that larger volumes of fat can be used, ideal for use in sculpting breasts to restore shape, size and symmetry without the need for implants. Often more fat is used initially to “overfill” the breast, as some fat is naturally recycled by the body.
However, fat transfer can also be used in conjunction with implants to provide more padding to the region giving a softer look.

- Lipomodelling for buttocks augmentation
Using fat transfer to increase the volume of the buttocks is known commonly as a Brazilian Butt Lift. Although it technically is not a surgery that “lifts” the buttocks, increasing the amount of fat in the area will result in better projection.
Like lipomodelling for breasts, surgeons will often “overfill” the buttocks initially to account for the ~40% of fat cells that are re-absorbed by the body.
Visit our Brazilian Butt Lift page for more information.
What to expect after fat transfer surgery
Following surgery it is common to have some bruising around the liposuction area but this will disappear in 7-10 days.
As mentioned, surgeons will often ‘overfill’ the area fat is being transferred to, so don’t be surprised if the area looks a little fuller then you expected initially. This overfilling compensates for the fact that about 40% of the fat injected is naturally reabsorbed by your body.
In some patients, this natural reabsorption continues over time and you may require more than one treatment.
The technique has been deemed safe by numerous associations and bodies. As with any surgical intervention, there are risks and these will be discussed fully with you during your consultation. In a very small number of cases, fat cells are unable to survive in their new home following transfer and this may be felt as a lumpy region. This can be assessed and treated by your surgeon.
