MyBreast comment on government response to Sir Bruce Keogh report on cosmetic surgery
Posted on January 3, 2014
We are delighted to hear that Dr Dan Poulter MP, the Health Minister, has supported Sir Bruce Keogh’s recommendation to develop a register for breast implants. During the PIP crisis it was shocking to find that certain providers of “care” were unable to identify those patients who had been given PIP implants, and that some were even unable to give the government’s review committee details of the numbers of implants used over a given period. A compulsory register will provide the data necessary for the independent monitoring of implant safety and it will provide the means with which to undertake a recall should there ever be cause for concern in the future. We hope that in time all implantable devices will be subject to registration.
We are also pleased to hear that The Royal College of Surgeons have been tasked with reviewing the training and practice of cosmetic surgery. While there are many examples of excellent practice in this country there have also been numerous cases where patients have been let down by both their surgeons and their providers of care. No patients should consider surgery if they are not confident that their surgeon is trained to the highest level and that they will be looked after with the care and attention that they deserve. You cannot afford to make a mistake, the results of a poor surgical outcome can have lifelong effects.
We understand that surgery of the highest quality is expensive and that patients rightly seek value for money. The founding aim at MyBreast is to provide surgical excellence at an affordable price. We work with some of the country’s best surgeons, we follow (and our founding surgeons have helped devise) best practice guidelines for the practice of plastic surgery, we use the highest quality of products and partner with the best hospitals. MyBreast collect data on all our surgical activity and our surgeons submit audit data to their professional organisations, and we have never used PIP implants. Our surgeons will advise you with care, they will operate with skill and they will provide thorough follow up and aftercare. MyBreast are proud to stand for affordable excellence.
