Preparing for Surgery

Pre Surgery Checklist

To ease any worries you have about surgery and to help you look forward to the day itself we’ve put together a list of instructions and advice in the build up to the surgery itself.

Pre-surgery guide

We advise following the below instructions before your surgery. Please also keep us informed of your general state of health immediately prior to surgery, for example, if you have contracted a cold, infection or flu.

  • We would prefer that you do not take any aspirin or related anti-inflammatory (pain killers), ie Ibuprofen, Voltarol, Nurofen, for two weeks prior to your surgery. In cases where these medicines are prescribed by your doctor, please discuss this with your surgeon before the operation. If painkillers are required, we suggest using paracetamol.
  • NOTE: It is imperative that you discuss with your surgeon all medications – including homeopathic remedies – that you have taken during the previous few months, as some may have adverse effects.
  • Do not eat, chew or suck any food or beverages for six hours before your surgery. This includes water, gum, mint and sweets.
  • If you smoke, follow your surgeon’s instructions prior to surgery. Smoking significantly reduces your body’s ability to heal effectively.
  • Do not drink any alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior to surgery.
  • Wash your body with antibacterial soap the night before surgery. This helps to rid your body of the naturally occurring bacteria found on the skin’s surface.
  • Remove any fingernail and toenail polish. If you wear acrylic nails, ask your surgeon if you have to remove them.
  • We suggest that you remove any body piercings prior to admission.
  • Please inform us immediately if you become pregnant.
